Abstract

617,871. Power-generating systems. SOC. CIVILE D'ETUDES THERMO - MECANIQUES. April 16, 1945, No. 9498. Convention date, Oct. 16, 1942. [Class 122 (iii)] In a power-generating system, combustion products from a steam boiler operate a gas turbine and also a compressor unit supplying air to the boiler. The system may include generation of mercury vapour to drive turbines in addition to steam turbines. Products of combustion are preferably at a pressure equal to that of the steam. As shown in Fig. 1, air compressed in cascade compressors 1 ... 4 is supplied to a steam generator 8 from which the combustion gases are directed to drive the compressors and, if desired, to operate a turbine 10. Steam generated in the boiler passes through H.P. turbine T resuperheating boiler 17 and L.P. turbine T' to the condenser from which condensate is supplied via compressor interstage coolers 5, 6, 7 and reheater 23 to the boiler. Boiler 17 receives compressed air from interstage cooler 16 and supplies combustion products to compressor stage 2 and also to turbine 10. The compressors may be of the free piston diesel type exhausting to the boiler. In a modification, Fig. 2, air or gaseous fuel compressed at 30, 31 generates mercury vapour and steam. in boiler circuits 34, 33. Mercury vapour is expanded in turbine 38 and returns to the boiler through compressed air and feed water heaters 52, 45; while the steam is supplied to turbine 37 having interstage heaters 35, 36. Condensed exhaust steam passes through compressor coolers 40, is reheated at 43, 44 by steam tapped from turbine 37 and at 45 by mercury turbine exhaust before returning to the boiler. Combustion products drive gas turbine 56<1> and compressors 55, 56.
