616,487. Cathode materials and processing. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and WOLFSON. H. Sept. 6, 1946, No. 26832. [Class 39 (i)] A method of manufacture of a cathode comprises coating the cathode with a mixture of tungsten carbide with thorium or with a material which when heated with the carbide yields thorium, and sintering the mixture. The material may be thorium, thoria or thorium hydroxide and may be applied with the tungsten carbide by electrophoresis; the mixture may be temporarily bonded by means of a binding agent such as nitrocellulose or methyl methacrylate. After the cathode has been coated it may be assembled in an electron discharge device and heated in vacuo at low temperature to drive off the binding agent; it is then heated at a high temperature to sinter the layer on to the cathode. The core may be of pure tungsten. The thorium content of the carbide layer may be 5 to 10 per cent, or more.
