Abstract

615,905. Plate heat exchangers. BURNETT & ROLFE, Ltd., and BURNETT, A. C. Nov. 14, 1945, No. 30483. [Class 64 (iii) ] In a heat exchanger, e.g. for heating milk, built up of a pack of parallel ribbed metal plates 10 clamped together to form compartments, the plates are flat and have bonded thereto a beading 19 of rubber or like resilient material at the edges of each plate, and ribs 21, 22, 23 of similar material forming boundaries of passages within the compartments. In the form shown, alternate plates have ribs and beading on both surfaces. On each surface, the beading 19 passes around two apertures 15, 18 and the other two apertures 16, 17, have separate rubber spacers 20. The ribs and beading are inverted and reversed from left to right on opposite surfaces of each plate. Dimples 31 provide local support, by contact with an adjacent plate, for beading on one face of plate 10 where there is no corresponding beading on the other face. The' ribbed plates 10 are assembled as shown in Fig. 5 with divider plates 24 interposed being supported by guide rods 13, 14 Each fluid flows in parallel through alternate compartments. In a modification, one or more apertures in plates 10 or 24 may be sealed, so that the liquid flows through each compartment successively instead of simultaneously. By introducing thick dividing plates the exchanger may also be divided into heating and cooling portions. In a further modification, plates 24 are omitted, and plates 10 have ribs and beading on one face only, the liquid passages being arranged as a mirror image of those alternate plates.
