[Class 44] In a door lock or latch of the kind in which the case has a removable false front cover-plate through which the head of the latch-bolt extends, and in which both the casing and the cover-plate embrace the bolt head so as to prevent rotation thereof, the bolt head 100 is arranged to be withdrawable, against the action of a spring 128, beyond the lock casing and rotatable in order to change the hands of the lock, and the extent to which the head may be withdrawn is so limited that it cannot be withdrawn beyond the cover-plate 104, so that the latter must be removed before the aspect of the head can be reversed. As shown, the latch head 100 is mounted slidably on a slide 101 by means of a screw 126, and a spring 128 which normally holds the head up to the slide 101, but allows it to be pulled out only to the extent shown in chain lines, at which position the spring becomes coil bound. As the inner end of the head is still within the opening in the plate 104, it cannot be rotated until the latter is removed. In the lock shown the slide 101 is outwardly urged by a spring 105, and is withdrawable by means of followers 108, 109 mounted on the spindles of inside and outside handles. A pawl 111 pivoted to the casing has one arm 113 engageable with the slide to prevent withdrawal, an arm 114 engageable with the followers 108, 109 on turning the latter in locking direction, and an arm 115 constituting an abutment engageable with the followers to stop movement thereof in looking direction.
