[Class 28(ii)] [Also in Group I] A hand-operated device for making plain or corrugated slices or for shredding without a change of cutters comprises a rectangular frame with a flexible plate e secured to one end c to lie in the plane of the frame, the inner edge of the plate e forming a knife-edge spaced from the corrugated knife-edge of a similar plate f secured to the opposite end d of the frame. Furthermore the space between the two knife-edges is occupied by a spindle j having two opposite sides flatted with equally spaced knives k mounted perpendicular to the frame on one flatted side. A slot g in each plate increases its flexibility so that it can be deflected out of the plane of the frame by cam members h connected in pairs to handles i. The ends of a U- shaped spring member m pass over the pivots n of the cams h and bear upon flats on the spindle j to hold the spindle in the required operative position. For shredding purposes the spindle j is adjusted so that the knives k are uppermost; the plate e is adjusted by the handle i so that its cutting edge is raised to give the required thickness. One end of a strut is inserted in a slot p in the plate f to engage with the end d of the frame; the opposite end of the strut and end c of the frame form a base for the device so that the frame is inclined at an angle to the vertical. The upper plate f forms a guiding surface down which the material to be cut is pushed through the knives k and on to the cutting edge of the plate e. To produce corrugations in the shredded material the frame is reversed so that the strut engages with a slot p in the cutter plate e, which becomes the guiding surface. When slices are required the spindle j is adjusted so that the knives k are below the frame and its upper surface forms a continuation of the guide surface.
