Abstract

Filaments, films, fabrics and the like of aromatic polyesters obtainable by heating glycols of the Series HO(CH2)nOH p (where n is an integer greater than 1, but not exceeding 10) with terephthalic acid or an ester-forming derivative thereof, particularly polyethylene terephalate, are dyed with acetate rayon dyestuffs dissolved or dispersed in aqueous media. Where the dyestuff contains a diazotizable group, the dyestuff may be subsequently diazotized upon the fibre and coupled with b -naphthol or 2,3-hydroxynaphthoic acid. The dyeing may be carried out in the presence of a swelling agent, examples of which include phenols, amines, carboxylic acids, amides, alcohols, ketones, nitriles, nitrobenzene, tetrachlorethane, tricresyl phosphate and tetramethylsulphone. The swelling agent may be dissolved or dispersed in water and used as a pretreating liquor, e.g. at 90-100 DEG C.
