Abstract

609,709. Brakes. CHRISTEN, F. June 13, 1944, No. 11293. [Class 103 (i)] In a compressed air brake, the control reservoir 3 is isolated, immediately the brake pipe pressure falls, from the auxiliary reservoir 2 and the brake pipe 9, by a valve 8 which is operated by a metallic bellows 21, the inside of which is subjected to pressure when the brake pipe is vented, through the accelerator valve 7 and the cut-off valve 35, to the pipes 23, 24, 33, into the brake cylinder. The valve 35 is promptly closed by control reservoir pressure in the metallic bellows 38. A throttle passage 19 is provided in the piston 16 of a quickinshot valve 4, which piston is raised by auxiliary reservoir pressure when the brake pipe pressure falls. This seats the piston against the cover of the valve 4 and shuts off the passage 19 and raises the valve 25 to connect the auxiliary reservoir with the brake cylinder. This connection is stopped when a predetermined brake cylinder pressure is attained, by the depression of a piston 30 carrying a valve 28. The auxiliary reservoir is then connected to the brake cylinder by the normal action of the control valve 6. The reservoirs 2, 3 are charged through valves 45, 46 and a pipe 44 which may include a valve having a metallic bellows, the inside of which is subjected to control reservoir pressure and the outside to auxiliary reservoir pressure, so that the valve opens if auxiliary reservoir pressure falls sufficiently below control reservoir pressure. The auxiliary and control reservoirs may be connected by means comprising valves, the compression springs of which are regulable by cam means, for releasing excess control reservoir pressure. In a modification, the valve 20 closes over a seating having small ports communicating with a throttle passage, corresponding to the passage 19, leading from the brake pipe to the seating. The closing of the valve on the seating isolates the control reservoir, auxiliary reservoir and brake pipe from one another.
