Abstract

Fluid-pressure.-In automobile brakes actuated by suction from the engine, the piston 3 working in the brake cylinder 1 is fitted with air-admission and suction valves 12, 13 formed as a single unit controlled by a spring 15 and by a sliding tube 8 connected to the brake pedal. Normally the tube 8 bears against the valve unit so as to close the valve 13 and open the valve 12 against the spring 15. When the brake pedal is actuated to apply the brakes, the tube 8 is moved to the left, allowing the spring to close the valve 12, and afterwards opening the valve 13, which allows the suction of the engine to be transmitted by means of a connection 21, ports 17, tube 8, and ports 10 to the closed end of the brake cylinder. As the piston 3 then moves to the right to apply the brakes, the valve 13 is again closed, and the amount of brake pressure is made to correspond to the depression of the pedal. If the engine fails, the brakes are applied directly by the engagement of flanges 16 on the tube 8 with the piston. In modifications, the tube 8 may be connected to the engine by a flexible conduit, and it may be actuated by means of a chain connected to, and working over, an oscillating sector while the brake piston may be connected to the brake shaft by an arrangement of levers. Also the valves may have spherical seats.
