Abstract

In a process for cleaning fine coal containing particles up to 1/4 in. in size by froth flotation using as collector a hydrocarbon compound, e.g. heavy oil or creosote fractions of coal tar, petroleum or other mineral oil and a frother, a wetting agent consisting of a water soluble alkali metal or ammonium salt of an organic compound containing a sulphonic acid or hydrogen sulphate group is added, either with or prior to the addition of the collector. The sulphonic acid or hydrogen sulphate group may be directly linked to the hydrocarbon radical, or may be through an amide linkage or an aryl linkage. The hydrocarbon radical may be an aliphatic primary alcohol having a chain of at least 12 p carbon atoms or a secondary alcohol having a chain of at least 8 carbon atoms. The wetting agent may be a mixture of the alkali metal or ammonium salts of secondary alkyl hydrogen sulphates having a chain of 10 to 18 carbon atoms in the molecule.
