Abstract

A dispersion of water in oil is prepared for the briquetting of fuel by mixing a petroleum or coal tar oil with a solution of an organic colloid in the presence of a small quantity of a soluble alkaline material; a saturated solution of an easily soluble salt is added with agitation and the mixture combined with finely divided fuel and a bituminous binding agent, the mass being mixed, heated and briquetted. Or the oil, colloid, water, and saturated solution may be mixed at atmospheric temperature and added to a large mass of the finished dispersion maintained in agitation at 90--99 DEG C., from which a supply is pumped and sprayed over the bituminous binder mixed or not with fuel. The bituminous binder may consist of pitch made from tar with sulphuric acid or as described in Specification 397,484, or of petroleum asphalt, the oil employed being creosote or tar oil in the one case and a petroleum oil, such as crude paraffin gas oil, Diesel oil, &c. in the other. The colloid may be obtained from cereals, casein, glue, sulphite cellulose liquor &c. and the alkaline material may be sodium silicate syrup. Examples of easily soluble salts employed comprise the chloride, chlorate, or nitrate of ammonium, alkali, or alkaline earth metal, or the sulphate of ammonium or alkali metal. In an example: the dispersion is made up of waste lubricating oil, 30 parts, flour sweepings, 7\ba1/2\be parts, sodium silicate \ba1/2\be part, ammonium nitrate 2 parts, and water 60 parts, 1,5 parts of the dispersion being incorporated in 94,8 parts of washed anthracite duff and 3,7 parts of petroleum asphalt.
