Abstract
608,178. Float-actuated valves. WALKER, P. T. Feb. 18, 1946, No. 4962. [Class 135] A float-actuated bulkhead valve in a ship's ventilating system for preventing the passage of water from one compartment to another in the event of flooding, comprises a V-shaped casing 1, Fig. 1, formed of two bolted sections 7, Fig. 2, and having end flanges for connection to ducts 4, 5, an intermediate flange for connection to a bulkhead 6, and a sump 13 having drain valves 17. Within the casing and guided by rods 15 are ball floats 14 of, e.g. rubber, wood or sheet metal, which, when air is passing through the ducts remain in the sump, but in the event of flooding of a compartment one of the balls, depending on the direction of flow, rises into contact with its seat 16 to prevent flooding of the adjacent compartment.
