607,679. Smoke &c. producing apparatus. BONVILLIAN, C. A., BRIERLY, R. C., and LETVIN, S. June 26, 1944, No. 12147. Convention date, June 26, 1943. [Class 81(i)] [Also in Group XI] In the production of smoke, &c., clouds by projecting a mixture of smoke-producing substance and combustion gases into the atmosphere, the combustion gases are formed by delivering fuel and air under pressure to a combustion chamber, and the smoke-producing substance is added either as fuel with the air under pressure, or is introduced under pressure into the combustion gases. The mixture is projected into the atmosphere at a velocity of the order of that of sound. Reference is made to the production of insecticidal smokes, &c. As shown in Fig. 1, a burner 12 is supplied with fuel for example, a lubricating oil, by a pump 26 driven by motor 27, through line 30, combustion air being delivered to a wind box 13 by compressor 32, also driven by motor 27, and thence to combustion. chamber 15 through louvres 14. The combustion chamber 13 is formed by an outer casing 11, and annular bands 16, 18, 19, 20, spaced from the casing by radial fins 21, 22, 23, 24 and so disposed as to form annular openings 38 whereby secondary air may be delivered from the windbox. An electric ignition device 36 is provided. The smoke-producing substance, &c., is delivered via pump 41, driven by motor 27, line 43, and branch lines 46 to atomizers 48 in member 49 connected to the combustion chamber by expansion joint 50. The smoke distributing member 13 formed with baffles 53 and discharge nozzles 52. In a modification, a pulverized smoke-producing substance is delivered tangentially into member 49 from a bin maintained under pressure by air delivered from the compressor. In another modification Fig. 4, the pulverized substance is aspirated from a bin 60 by air passing through nozzle 62 in line 63 connected to the compressor. Any number of discharge arms may be provided, four being indicated in Fig. 4, or the distributing device may comprise a series of rings with air spaces therebetween. The apparatus may be mounted on trunnions, and a flexible member used in place of the rigid member 49. Specification 597,151. [Group XII], is referred to.
