[Class 18] A carton comprises an outer casing 11 of cardboard or like material and an inner liner of tubular construction. The liner is secured at one or both ends to inner closure flaps 23 of the outer casing within an area 33 of triangular shape with the base of the triangular area on the line of folding of the inner closure flaps. By folding outwardly the inner closure flaps, triangular tabs 33 are formed from the triangular areas of the liner secured to the flaps and the mouth of the liner is formed into a lateral seam 32. The lateral seam may be sealed by adhesive or coated with thermo-plastic material and is folded down into the plane of the end of the carton. The flaps are finally folded inwardly and sealed to complete the closure. The lateral seam may, when folded down, overlap one flap 24 and be folded back over the flaps 23 whereupon the flaps 24 are folded down and sealed. In apparatus for closing the carton, pairs of rotary folders 31 at the first folding station fold the flaps 23 outwardly. At the second folding station, the upstanding lateral seam 32 passes between a pair of ploughs 36, 37 which guide the seam into the end plane of the carton. The flaps 23, 24 are then closed in the usual manner.
