Abstract

606,619. Electric water heaters. WIGELAND, A. R. Jan. 19, 1946, No. 1903. Convention date, Feb. 10, 1941. [Class 39(iii)] [Also in Group XIII] In an electric water heater wherein the water is heated in a compartment separate from the hot water container proper, the water level in the separate compartment is independent of that in the container and is maintained substantially constant by means of a diaphragm actuating a supply valve. Water from the mains supply enters at 33 and passes by way of a valve compartment 22 through holes 18, 17 into a tube 12 until the head of water in tubes 6, 12 reaches a certain value when the pressure of water on a flexible diaphragm 20 closes the valve to cut off the supply of water. The water in the tube 12 is boiled by means of an electric heating element 15 and some is ejected through tubes 4 into the container 10, thereby reducing 'the pressure on the diaphragm 20 and allowing a spring 30 to open the valve and permit the entry of more water until the former level is restored. When the water in the container 10 reaches a level marked 35, a circulation of water takes place through a tube 5 into the compartment 11. Tubes 7 and 32 allow the escape of steam and maintain the pressure inside the heater equal to the external atmospheric pressure. The heater wire is coiled on a steatite cartridge 15 enclosed in a watertight metal jacket 16 depending by a pipe 14 from a wider part 3 held by a bayonet catch 2. One or more outlets 34 are provided.
