Abstract
605,880. Printing-machines. SHURLEY, F. Aug. 3, 1945, No. 19987.[Class 100(ii.)] A rotary printing-machine for printing on curved articles such as bottles. tumblers, &c., is constructed with a printing-cylinder 13 fitted with four rubber printing-plates 13a for printing superposed impressions on the article A which is fed to printing position by carriers 12 on chains 10 which are driven intermittently by a driving chain 18, Fig. 1, arranged between two discs 14, 15, Fig. 2 not shown, fixed to a shaft 4 of the conveyer, the chain 18 having pins which engage notches in one disc to effect the drive the other disc being formed with notches engaged by a catch to hold the shaft 4 fixed during the printing operation. For this operation the article A is raised from the chains 10 by means of a yoke 90, Fig. 4, mounted on a support 89 fitted with an adjustable roller 92 engaging a cam 87 driven by chain gearing from a gear 44 mounted on one end of the cylinder 13. This gear 44 also drives a gear 46 by means of which a chuck 54 is operated to effect rotation of the article A when the chuck has been moved axially to engage one end of the article by means of a cam 69 which engages the rounded cap 41 on a spring-pressed rod 40 to which the chuck 54 is secured. The other end of the article is held by a chuck 76 mounted resiliently under control of an adjustable spring 75. The cam 69 is geared to the gear 44. The bearings 33, 33a in which the chucks are mounted can be adjusted by screw-and-nut mechanism to suit articles A of different sizes, and gears 46 of different sizes are provided to ensure that the articles A rotate at the surface speed of the printing-plates. The shaft 26 of the printing-cylinder is driven by bevel gearing from the main drive shaft 2, and this is fitted with four pairs of cams 97, 97a, 98, 98a, 100, 100a, Fig. 9, for controlling the operation of the inking rollers 110, which ink the several inking plates. Each complete inking-mechanism 95 is carried by a support 102 and is movable radially of the cylinder 13, being reciprocable in castings 96 under control of the cams 97, 97a &c. rollers 107 mounted in the supports 102 being spring-pressed into contact with the cams. Each mechanism 95 comprises an ink duct 124 fitted with a flexible metal blade 125, Figs. 9, 17, adjustably held in contact with a metal roller 123 by means of screws 126. The inking mechanisms are driven from the gear 45 by means of gears 111 which drive the rollers 110 by means of an Oldham coupling which permits adjustment of the roller 110 by rotation of eccentric bearings in which the rol-ler 110 is mounted. The gear 111 also drives the roller 123 and a shaft 128 of a cam 130 which oscillates a rubber messenger roll 133 which transfers ink to a metal distributing roller 149. Ink is transferred to the roller 110 by means of a rubber roller 148 which co-acts with rubber rollers 146, 149 which are reciprocated axially in opposite directions by crank mechanism driven from the gear 111 by worm and bevel gearing.
