Abstract
An alloy steel has the composition:- .Ni.(with or without .replacement by. .Cr up to 3.5%).14 to 17.5% .Co.8 to 12% .Mo.4 to 5% .Al.0.05 to 0.45% .optionally Ti.0 to 0.45% .Zr.0 to 0.1% .C.0 to 0.05% .V.0 to 0.45% .W.0 to 2% .Nb.0 to 0.5% .Ta.0 to 0.5% .Cu.0 to 3% .Be.0 to 0.3% .Fe.as balance except for impurities such as Si e.g. 0.2% max., Mn e.g. 0.2% max., B e.g. 0.003%, N, Ca, rare earths, Li, Mg, U, S, P, O, H, Sb, Sn, Se, Te, As and Bi. The steel may be homogenized by heating at 1120-1180 DEG C., e.g. for 4 hours in an argon atmosphere, cooled to transform to martensite, then aged at 425-540 DEG C.for 1 to 10 hours.
