Abstract

604,406. Woodworking machinery ; composite boards ; grinding and polishing. LEADERFLUSH, Ltd., and BROUGH, R. A. Dec. 5, 1945, No. 32833. [Classes 60, 145 (i) and 145 (ii)] [Also in Group X] A door or the like 1 has an edging strip 4 fitted to at least one style 2 thereof by a tapered dovetail joint. A machine for making such a door comprises means for cutting the groove 3 in the style 2 and the projection 5 on the edging strip 4 and means for fitting the projection 5 endwise into the groove 3. The doors 1 are fed from a hopper 3a by a conveyer 7, Fig. 3, driven from a motor 8, Fig. 4, past cutters 10, Fig. 6, operated by motors 16. A chain 11 passing over vertically adjustable sprockets 11a engages the upper surfaces of the doors. Each motor 16 is pivotally mounted at 16b in a slide 16e so that the depth and width of the cut may be adjusted. The two cutters are connected to arms 18 having racks engaged by a pinion 19 on a shaft 20. When a door passes to the cutters 10 a pair of rollers 21 are raised whereby, through a system of linkage, a double cone clutch 25 keyed to a shaft 25a is moved into engagement with a large gear wheel 27 rotated by a small pinion 28 on a shaft 8a driven by the motor 8 so that the shaft 25a is slowly rotated and through worms and a worm wheel 25b the shaft 20 is slowly rotated to effect the tapering of the groove. When the door passes from the cutters 10 and the rollers 21 fall, the clutch 25 is engaged with a small pinion 29 rotated by a large gear wheel 30 on the shaft 8a so that the cutters 10 quickly return to their starting position. The door now passes 'on to rollers 31 which carry it past a glueing device 32 consisting of a reservoir communicating with a compartment containing felt to regulate the flow of glue to a number of spring-pressed pivoted brushes which apply the glue to the groove. The door then passes on to lugs 34 of vertical chains 35 which are raised intermittently to carry the door first to a position A, Fig. 4, where it receives its edging strips, and then into engagement with means which feed it to trimming and sanding devices. The edging strip for each side is fed from a hopper 36, Fig. 5, between top and bottom guide plates by a chain 37 at the side against which it is held by rollers, past cutter devices 43 similar to the grooving cutters 10 but oppositely arranged and carried by arms 44 engaged by a pinion 45 on the shaft 20 to cause the tapering, and past a glueing device 46 similar to the glueing device 32 into engagement with a door in the position A. When the strips are completely fitted, one of them engages a spring-urged catch 47 causing a bell-crank 47c linked to it to release a clawbar 49, Fig. 13, pivoted on a disc 51 freely mounted on a continuously driven shaft 48a, so that it engages a ratchet wheel fixed to the shaft 48a and clutches the disc 51 to the shaft 48a. The disc 51 drives a shaft 53 carrying three cams 55, 56, 57. First the cam 55 allows a pair of frames 59 engaging it to fall thereby releasing four devices 58, Fig. 16, which engage the top of the door to clamp it while it receives its edging strips. Each device 58 comprises an arm 58a pivoted to the frame 59 and to a lever 58c pivoted to a fixed bracket 58f. The arm 58a is connected to an extension 58g of the lever 58c by a spring 58h, and an adjusting screw 58j on the lever 58c regulates the clamping position of the device on the door. Lower clamping devices for the door each comprise a rocking arm 58d pivoted at 58l to a fixed bracket and having an inclined ramp 58n which is engaged and moved out of the way by the next door as it rises. Next the cam 56 rocks an arm 60 pivoted at 60a and releases a clawker 61a which engages a clutch consisting of a disc 61 and a ratchet wheel on a shaft 61e similar to the clutch 48. The disc 61 drives a shaft 65, Fig. 15, carrying a crank disc 66 having eccentrically mounted thereon a link pivoted to a lever 67 which is connected by links 67a to fixed brackets 70e so that rotation of the crank disc 66 reciprocates the lever 67 vertically as well as horizontally. Thus vertical rods 70 having rollers 70b engaging the lever 67 are reciprocated and they drive, through ratchet and pawl mechanisms, the upper sprockets 35a carrying the chains 35 to raise the doors. The cam 57 operating after the cams 55, 56 permits frames 71f to fall. Z-shaped levers 71a, Fig. 16, pivoted to a fixed bracket 71c are connected to each frame 71f so that when the frame falls each lever is rocked and its lower part 71d engages the side of the door to locate it horizontally. Adjustment of the position to which the lever moves the door is effected by a screw 71h engaging a lug on the lever. When the door reaches the top of the chains 35,.it is engaged by pallets 74 of a vertically adjustable chain 73 extending horizontally above the chains 35 and is carried on to a chain 41. The door is then fed past devices 76 which trim the outer edges of the edging strips, each comprising a cutter 76a and a motor 87b mounted for adjustment towards and from the door edge. The door then passes between two pairs of cutter units 77, 78 which trim the upper and lower edges of the edging strip and are driven by motors 77b, 78b adjustably mounted in slides 77c, 78c. Guide rollers 77e, 78e fixed to the cutter units and riding on the surfaces of the doors ensure that the edging strips are trimmed flush with the door even though it may have uneven surfaces. The door then passes to a sanding device comprising two pairs of rollers 79 and two resiliently mounted rollers 81 round which pass two endless belts 80 of sandpaper. The rollers 79, 81 are mounted in frames 82 reciprocated from a crank 83 so that the rollers have a substantially axial movement to avoid forming grooves in the door. To provide for quick adjustment for doors of different widths all the mechanisms acting on one side of the doors may be mounted in a framework slidable on the base of the machine and movable through bellcrank levers by a single hand-wheel. A travelling chain may be provided beneath the machine to carry the sawdust to a pit from which it is removed bv suction. A modified door has two dovetails joining each style and edging strip.
