'I'he present invention relates to improvements in veneer handling machines and has for one of its objects that of providing a machine which will, in one and the same operation, joint and glue the edges of the veneer sheets, wli'ereby when the sheets are laid edge to edge. the edges and the glue secure A further object of my invention is to provide a machine which will joint and glue'a bundle of veneer sheets at one and the same time.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a machine whereby the bundle of veneer sheets may be fed therethrough for jointing and gluing with an even and uniform pressure on the stack of sheets so that the edges will be jointed to produce straight andl truel edges thereon and also spread a uniformv amount of glue on the edge of veneers without permitting glue to get on the sides of veneer sheets.
For the purpose of disclosing the invention, I have illustrated the samel in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a machine embodying myv invention;
Fig.`2 is a plan view thereof; f
Fig. 3 is 'a detail section of the compression track for the pressure chain of the apparatus;4 Fig. 4 is a detail side elevation of the pressure chain operating on the compression track illustrated in Fig. 3:
Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the compression track showing the pressure chain in position drive;
Fig. 11 is a detail elevation of the pressure chain drive;
Fig. 12 is a detail elevation of the feed chain; and
Fig. 13 is a detail section of the feed chain.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated, a base I is provided on which the various-parts are adaptedto be mounted and the top of this base provides a bed surface 2. Arranged in the center of the bed 2 is a housing 3 on either side pair of grooves or channels l and I0. Arranged in-each of these grooves or channels and adapted to project above the'surface of the bed 2 is a liointer head I I and a glue wheel I2, each adapted to rotate in the direction of the arrows, as indicated. Also, arranged in the bottom of the bed 2 within the grooves or channels are foraminous cover plates I2' 'through either of which air is delivered to the edges of the veneer stacks after they have received a glue application.
Each of the traveling chains and pressure plates 1 and 8 is of the same construction and it is, therefore, only necessary to describe specically'one of the same. Each of the traveling chains comprises preferably a linked chain Il of the character illustrated in Figs. 4' and 5. Plate members Il having downwardly extending spaced-apart lugs I5 are carried bythe chain, provision being made for the spaced apart lugs to embrace the side links of the chain and receive the extended ends I0 of the pivot members I'l cf the chain.
For providing a pressure track for this continuous pressure chain, I provide a preferably U-shaped member I8l which is supported on the bed 2 and which is adjustable to and from the chain 4 by `means of suitable adjusting screws I9 carried in brackets 2li extending from the side of the bed, I. These screws are manipulated by suitable mechanism and the mechanism of each screw is, simultaneously operated bya common shaft '2i so thatboth ends of the U-shaped backing member I I may be adjusted at the same time.. The U-shaped member Il is adapted to supporton its front face `a series of v pressure bars. 22, each `ofwhich is supported in a bracket 22" pivotally mounted between the side walls of the member Il. To this end, the bracket at one end is provided with a pivot pin 23 which, as illustrated in Fig. 5, is pivoted in the side walls Il. These brackets 22" are substantially U-shaped in cross section. as shown in Fig. 5 and each of the pressure plates 22 has a downwardly lextending portion 22' fitting between the legs lof the bracket vand adapted to receive a pivot pin 22' which extends through vthe bracket and through the extension 22'. The forward end" of the bracketis provided with a forwardly extending projecting ilnger 24 fiattened as at 25 on its upper surface and adapted to bear againstl the pivot pin 22 -of the next adiaof vwhich is arranged to travel a continuously driven chainindicated' at providing driving surfaces 5 and l adapted to cooperate Awith conveyor chains. .There are two sets of these conveyor chains, one, set indicated at l being arranged on one -slde of the center chain and the other sets, indicated at 8 being arranged on the opposite side thereof to thereby form between the conveyor chain and the pressure chains a cent bracket. Pressure springs 20 are interposed between theforward end of the bracket 22" and the back 2l of the housing Il, these springs being centered on lugs 28 on the bracket and 2l on the housing.
The track sections or pressure bars 22. as shown, are substantially U-shaped, having a flattened outer surface $0 on which-the inner face rof the pressure plate Il is adapted to'rest,
the conveyor chain i3 being adapted to be received between the legs of the track section. These track sections, as above described, are provided along the entire length of each of the pressure members 1 and 8 to bias the pressure members toward the backing chain 4 so 4that as the veneer stack is drawn through the throats l and il, they will be pressed against the backing chain 4 with an even and uniform pressure and nrmly held in stacked relation.
The pressure chains and the backing'chains are all driven substantially at the same speed from a single driving motor 3l suitably supported on the side of the` bed l. The shaft of this motor has a worm gear driving connection with a worm gear 22 mounted on a vertically extending shaft 33. This shaft is provided with a driving sprocket J4 adapted to drive the drivremoval of the glue pot when desired. provide a depressing cam 4I on the end of a shaft '62 rotatably mounted in downwardly extending lugs 83 and adapted to engage a projection 64 on ing chain indicated at 35`which, in turn;v drives the driving sprocket 36 carried on a vertically disposed shaft 31 which shaft, in turn, carries a driving sprocket for the backing chain 4. This shaft l1 also is provided with a second driving sprocket 3l adapted to receive a driving chain Il in turn driving a sprocket 40 on a swinging arm 4l'. The free end of this arm carries a gear 4i' adapted to mesh with and drive the gear 42 on shaft 42' which carries a driving sprocket for the pressure chain 1. A swinging arm 43 is mounted on this shaft and has its opposite end pivotally and adjustably mounted in aslot 4|" in the end of the arm 4l.
At the opposite end of the machine, backing chain 4 passes over a sprocket 44 mounted on the shaft 44' 4which drives the pressure chain 8 by a gear and chain drive similar -to that for driving chain 1 from shaft 31.`
It is thus seen that all of the conveyor and pressure chains are simultaneously and coinci-` dently driven from the single driving means.
As illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 and 8, each of the glue wheels I2 is mounted in and receives glue from a glue, pot 53. As each of the glue wheels is of the same constructionl a description of one only is necessary. One wall of the glue pot is provided with an opening 54 extending downwardly from the topf thereof to accommodate the driving shaft of the glue wheel. Each glue pot is provided with a cover member 52 adapted to be supported ou the side walls and between the end walls of the pot, the side walls of the glue pot being somewhat shorter in height than the end walls to permit the cover 52 to be countersunk below the top of the end walls so that the top surface of the cover will be ush with the top surface of the end walls. 'Ihis cover is provided with a pair of spaced apart downwardly extending lugs B5 between which is pivotally mounted on the pivot pin 5l a supporting yoke 51 at the forward end of' which, the glue wheel is adapted to be supported on the shaft Il mounted between the fingers of the yoke. The yoke is biased, and with it the glue wheel, in a raised position, by a coiled spring 5B' having one end connected to the yoke, and the other connected to a lug 59 on the under side of the cover I2, whereby the glue wheel is normally maintained in its raised and operative position for contact with the edge ofthe veneer stack as it passes through the machine. The glue pot is adapted to be suppo'rted in the position beneath the bed 2 on suitable supporting rails l0 so that the same can be slid in and out of position and in order 4that the glue wheel may be depressed below the surface of the cover 52 to permit the the end of the yoke 51. The outer end of this shaft 82 projects through a slot 45 in the wall of the glue pot and the outer end of this shaft is provided with a crank arm 6I whereby by the rotation of a crank arm, the cam 6| may be rotated to depress the yoke 51 and with it the glue wheel so that the glue wheel may be lowered to or below the top surface of the cover 52 permitting the glue pot as a unit to be slid out from under the bed 2. Obviously, when the glue pot is slid into position, the glue wheel may be raised to its gluing position by the reverse movement of the crank it to permit this glue wheel to project through a slot in the bed 2 whereby it will be in the path of the stack of veneers as they pass through the machine. 'I'he shaft 58 of each of the glue wheels is provided at its inner end with a spiral worm gear Il adapted in turn to m'esh -with spiral wheels $9 and 10 on the longitudinally extending shaft 1 I. This shaft is driven by a bevel gear train 12 from the shaft 33 which, as heretofore explained, 'is driven from the main drive motor 3|.
In addition to tli'eglue wheels, there is provided in each of the throats 9 and I0 a jointer head Il' which extends above the surface of the bed and each jointer head is driven from its separate motor 14, the iointer head being mountedon the shaft 15 of the motor.
Por the purpose of delivering heated air to the glued edges of the stack of veneer sheets after they have passed beyond the glue wheel, as has heretofore been explained, the bottom of the bed is provided with a foraminous portion I2' which forms the top of a conduit 16 adapted to receive heated air from a suitable blower 11. y
In operation, the stack of veneer sheets is fed into the throat I0 from the righthand side as it is picked up by the backing chain 5 and the pressure chain forming the throat. Itis fed forward, to the left, looking at Fig. 2, over the jointer head II whereby the edges of the sheets forming the stack are properly ltrimmed and smoothed. After passing over the jointer head, the stack passes over the glue wheel l2 which, rotating in the glue pot, applies a smooth layer of glue to the edges of the sheets forming the stack and by continued passage, this glue is dried through the delivery of hot air thereto. After the stack has been passed through one throat, the stack is turned upside down to present a new face or edge and it is fed back to the right through the other throat i having its opposite edge jointed and glued in the same manner.
