[Class 37] A support plate 1 of a rectifier cell unit is coated with a layer of selenium which constitutes one electrode of all the cells on the plate, separate cells 2 being formed by spraying a layer of metal acting as a counter electrode and dividing this layer with the aid of a pattern into, for example, nine separate counter electrodes 2. Connection is made from each counter electrode to a common central wire 21 insulated from the plate 1 by an insulating bush 20, a connection is also made between the wire 23 and the plate 1. A plurality of plates 1 may be assembled as required with ventilating channels 3, 4, 5, and spacing elements interposed, as described in Specification 599,511. A contact bar 13 is supported at the top of the assembly, and is provided with contact strips 22, 24, to which connecting wires 21, 23, are soldered, thus facilitating the circuit and external supply connections during assembly,
