Abstract

556,188. Thermionic valves. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. May 14, 1942, Nos. 6544 and 6545. Convention dates, May 17, 1941. [Class 39 (i)] In a thermionic valve the central cathode 12, Fig. 6, is surrounded by a number of discs 20 spaced apart and insulated from each other by collars 27 on insulating sleeves 26 carried on support rods 23, 24 ; the discs have extensions 22 by which they are connected independently to control circuits to enable each disc to act as a separate control element. The connections from the extensions 22 are by the rods 40, Fig. 1, which pass through the lower mica spacer 15, and are welded to leads 35 passing through the ring seal 34 in the envelope ; the leads to the cathode and anode also pass through this seal. The anode consists of two plates 18 one on each side of the disc assembly. In a modification the anode is formed by discs alternating with the control discs, the former of larger diameter than the latter. In the above arrangements the electrode assembly is supported by the rods 40 and plates 17 carried by the mica spacers and bearing on the envelope. In another form the electrodes are mounted between end spacers 14, 15, Fig. 11, which are held between the crimped ends of the rods 23, 24 on which the control discs 20 are threaded. In the upper end of the envelope are sealed two hangers 59, 60 which are welded to the rods 23, 24 and support the electrode assembly. The cathode and anode leads 29, 38 pass through a press 52 which is formed on a base 51 ; this has a flange 54 forming with the flange 34 the ring seal for the control leads 35. The two anode plates 18 are held by wires welded thereto and fixed in the lava or mica spacers, the wires being connected by braces.
