Abstract

833,352. Centrifugal pumps. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. April 18, 1956 [April 22 1955], No. 11775/56. Class 110(1). The fuel pump shown is mounted on the bottom wall of an aircraft fuel tank by means of a flange 14. The impeller 11 and the adjacent casing wall 23 are of conical form, as described in Specification 783,468, providing flow passages which decrease in cross-sectional area from inlet to outlet, the resultant increase in pressure tending to condense the vapour. Uncondensed vapour discharged by the impeller past a sharp annular ridge 33 at the top of the wall 23 tends to accumulate at the bottom 35 of the discharge volute 18, and is vented through passages 30 to a zone of pressure lower than discharge pressure, such as the fuel tank. Vapour accumulating in a pocket 38 behind the impeller is similarly vented through passages 36.
