600,698. Earth-removing rotary excavators. BURGESS, A. F. (Harnischfeger Corporation). Nov. 20, 1945, No. 31189. [Class 68 (i)] [Also in Groups I and X] A tooth 3 for an earth-removing rotary excavator varies in width so that a zone 91 of narrow width is formed between a flat shank 9 and a shovel portion 9<SP>11</SP> which also varies in width and terminates in a cutting edge 9<SP>111</SP>. A rib 10 is formed on the tooth and merges into the cutting edge. The tooth is secured in the mortise of a bracket 4, welded on to a rotatable shaft 2, by a split key 7 and ribs 8 which engage with a serrated face 5 of the mortise. Tangential deflection of the tooth is limited by two stops 13 which straddle the tooth and come into engagement with the back of the tooth at a point just after the start of the rib when the tooth is deflected a predetermined amount. Limited lateral deflection may occur at the zone 91.
