Abstract
600,096. Television. JACKSON, D., and PYE, Ltd.. Sept. 27, 1945, No. 25046. [Class 40 (iii)] [Also in Group XL (a)] In cathode-ray tube apparatus, a cathode-ray tube carried by a chassis is enclosed in a cabinet having an opening in its front wall through which the screen end portion of the tube projects, this end being covered by a housing which projects from the front wall of the cabinet. In Figs. 1, 2, a cabinet 10 enclosing a chassis 11 has a cathoderay tube 12 supported at the rear end by a saddle 13 and at the front (screen) end by a saddle and strap arrangement 14. The front end of the tube which overhangs the front edge 15 of the chassis is fitted with an embracing rubber gasket ring 16 incorporated integrally with a masking frame 17 and projects through an opening 19 in the front wall of the cabinet over which an oblong housing 20 having upper and lower bulbous portions 21 is fitted. The gasket has a portion 31, Fig. 3, which is shaped to fit around the front periphery of the tube. The housing 20 is openfronted and formed with a recess 22 in which a transparent protective plate 23 is held by a bezel 24, the whole assembly being secured to the chassis by bolts 25. The ring 16 rests in a saddle strip member 36 supported at the front edge of the chassis by two angle plate brackets 32, Fig. 6, and is secured therein by an embracing strap 38 clamped to strip 36 by bolts 40. Two axial slots are provided at diametrically opposite points on the gasket ring 16 so that it can be tightened by the clamping strap and saddle against the tube without compressing the gasket to any great extent. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the masking frame is incorporated integrally with the housing, by moulding as a unit in a plastic material, and is formed with a recess to receive a transparent window plate. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the projecting housing, masking frame and protective window are all made integrally as a single unit by moulding or pressing a transparent plastic material and rendering opaque, by spraying on the rear surface, all portions except that constituting the protective window plate. A loud-speaker 26 for reproducing the sound accompanying the signals displayed on the tube screen 18 may be covered with a grille or fret member 27 incorporating a movable shutter 28 behind which some of the pre-set controls may be disposed.
