Abstract

566,398. Sound-magnifying appliances. FOUNTAIN, Ltd., G. R., HOULGATE, H. J., and WHEELER, G. C. June 21, 1943, No. 9944. [Class 13] [Also in Group XXXIX] In a loud-speaker unit designed to be substantially waterproof, for use, for example in an outdoor public address system, the horn mouth 1 fits on to the expanded front end 36 of a tubular casing 2 containing the drive unit 4, the rear end 3 of the casing being closed so that the drive unit can only be inserted from the front, and the unit 2 also carrying a moulding or casting 10 to which are fitted re-entrant horn members 14, 17. The unit 4 and the member 10 are made a close fit in the casing 2 and the unit is held in position by a screw 7 in the rear end of the casing engaging a member 8 secured to the matching transformer 5 which is in turn secured to the drive unit 4. The intermediate horn member 17 is fitted on ribs 22 on the member 10 and the closed end of the member 6 and the front face of the member 10 are provided with conical sound-reflecting surfaces 23, 24, 25, 26 as shown. Sealing elements 9, 34, 35 of rubber or leather are fitted to the head of the screw 7, at the end of extension 36, and at the head of screws 11, respectively. The whole unit may be supported from a stirrup bracket 30 mounted by trunnions on a split clamping band 28 so as to give universal adjustment. The band 28 may clamp the horn mouth 5 on to the casing extension 36 or the casing 2 on to the unit 4. The electrical leads are taken through a gland 32 in the wall of casing 2 or through the horn mouth 1.
