[Class 68 (i)] A mining-machine, of the kind in which a shearing head of wedge-like form is thrust into the coal behind and parallel to the face to remove the coal by direct shearing or chisel action, is provided with a connection whereby the reaction to the thrust is transmitted to the structure of a coal-face conveyer which is held stationary on the mine floor. In Fig. 2, the wedge head comprises a forward wedge portion 12, upper and lower wedge portions 10 and a lower shovel component 16 which delivers coal over a plate 17 to the face conveyer 24 ; the upper component 10 may have a horizontal edge for clearing coal from the roof. The wedge head is secured to the cylinder 20 of a hydraulic ram, the ram 21 of which is pivoted to an anchorage block 22 mounted on a skid. Jaws 30, 32 on the machine loosely engage the flange of a rail 28 secured to the conveyer frame, and a pawl 34, pivoted between the jaws 32, co-operates with rack teeth 35 on the rail 28 to transmit to the conveyer reaction to the thrust of the machine. The conveyer is held by roof props engaging sockets 37. In another form, Fig. 8, a movable bar 40 rests in a trough extension 41 of the conveyer base and is held by roof props and by cross-bars 47A engaging slots in the bar, the upper surface of the bar having a guide rail 42 and a rack for engagement by the pawl 34. In a further form, a bar similar to bar 40, Fig. 8, has on its upper side a rack engaged by motor-driven pinions on the coal-cutting machine, whereby the latter is advanced.
