Abstract

In an advancing mine roof support comprising a series of props mounted on a base and supporting one part of the superstructure and in which a further prop 61 supports another part of the superstructure the prop 61 is adapted to be moved forwardly along a slot 60 formed in the base upon operation of traction means to provide a forward support to the superstructure as a whole whilst the base remains stationary. The traction means consist of a hydraulic ram pivoted at one end to a seating for a forward prop and secured at its other end to the superstructure which has sliding engagement with the seating, see Fig. 5 (not shown). Additional traction means 78, 80, 81 having a pair of laterally spaced slide bars 83 are also provided in the base for producing controlled advancement thereof as set out in Specifications 1037914 and 1037916. The prop 61 is supported from the superstructure by retraction springs, see Fig. 4 (not shown). For details of operation of forepoling arms employed and prop and superstructure details Specifications 983551, 1037911, 1037913, 1037914, 1037917 and 1037919 should be referred to. The base is provided with rubber seals 29 for the rams 78 and a shield 73 having reinforcements 75, 75a of which the former 75 is curved at 76 to accommodate the prop 61. In a modification, Figs. 8, 9 and 10 (not shown), two base elements are employed and the traction means in the base incorporates a chain or wire rope collecting element. For other minor details and mode of operation the Specification should be referred to.
