Abstract

In the coating of metals with other metals and alloys, the metals &c. are coated with a suspension of a mixture of one or more metals in powdered form and powdered compounds of the metals in a solvent having a low vapour pressure at room temperature and a relatively high vapour pressure at moderately elevated temperature, the coated metal being then subjected to a temperature sufficient to volatilize the solvent and dry the coating on the metal and then to a higher temperature in a hydrogen atmosphere sufficient to decompose and volatilize the metal coating, reduce the metal compounds and sinter the coating metal on to the base metal. The metal compounds used are the oxides, oxalates, carbonates and nitrates in a solution of nitrocellulose dissolved in a solvent such as a mixture of diethyl oxalate and diethyl carbonate. Examples describe the production of a copper or nickel coating on an iron wire using a mixture of the metal and oxide, the production of a "Monel" (R.T.M.) coating by using nickel powder and copper oxide or a mixture of nickel powder, and nickel oxalate and copper oxide powders, a silver alloy coating on an iron wire using a mixture of silver and copper oxalate powders, and a platinum-nickel alloy coating on a molybdenum wire by using a mixture of platinum black and nickel oxide powder.
