Abstract

Coating material applied to the wall of an electron discharge device to inhibit arc-discharges comprises a finely-divided powder such as ferric oxide dispersed in alkali-metal silicate. The ferric oxide may be replaced wholly or partly by chromic oxide, or metals such as iron, nickel or copper which form insulating surface oxides may form the powder in the silicate. Where the coating is a strip adjacent an electrode wall coating, it may comprise finely-divided metals such as silver, gold or platinum and must be free of carbon in any form. In an example, the coating material is prepared by dissolving sodium silicate in distilled water which may be heated if desired, and adding slowly with constant stirring, ferric oxide. The weight of ferric oxide is preferably from about two to five times the weight of sodium silicate. A binder such as gelatin with ammonium hydroxide may be added. Potassium silicate may be used instead of sodium silicate.
