Abstract
597,905. Lathes. BUGATTI, E. July 11, 1945, No. 17748. Convention date, March 30, 1943. [Class 83 (iii)] A capstan-lathe has means, separate from the turret, to support the tool during machining- operations. The support 15 has two pads 41 and 42, Fig. 7, at the back of and beneath the tool-shank 9 whilst a spring-loaded pad 43 secures the shank against upward displacement, the tool being mounted in known manner in the turret 4, Fig. 1. The support is mounted on a transversely adjustable slide 16 carried by a slide 18 adjustable lengthwise of the bed 1, and which may be extended to carry a toolbox 23.. In each operational position of the turret a bias is effected by spring-loaded balls 36, Fig. 4, acting against the sides of V-grooves to maintain the tool against the support 15. For machining tapered work, the tool is fed laterally by the turret and transversely by the support ; in this case the slide 16 is camoperated to keep the tool along the taper of the work whilst a spring asserts itself at the end of the working-stroke to withdraw the tool from the work. The support may be adapted to facilitate .removal and replacement of the tool.
