Abstract
597,217. Wave-guides. MULLETT, L. B. July 14, 1944, No. 13545. [Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v)] In ultra-high-frequency apparatus employing a wave-guide for the transmission of energy, the passage of wave energy in a wave-guide is controlled by means of a probe which is mounted so as to be capable of being advanced into or retracted from the wave-guide by longitudinal movement. Fig. 1 shows a transformer in which E0 waves in a circular guide 1 are converted into H1 waves in either of rectangular guides 2 or 3. Steel probes 4, 5 arranged at a distance of one-quarter wavelength on each side of the axis of guide 1 are arranged to project alternately into guides 2, 3 by means of cams 6, 7 on a shaft 8. This causes the energy from guide 1 to pass alternately into guides 2, 3. A resonant ring 9 of the kind described in Specification 597,216 prevents reflection of H1 waves back into guide 1. The probes may be positioned in the guides 2, 3 at a distance of three-quarters of a wavelength from the axis of guide 1. In this case, small bulges 10 are formed in the opposite walls of the guides to prevent sparking. Specification 608,839 also is referred to.
