Abstract
596,965. Bolling tubes ; cold-rolling. THURSTON, A. P. (Rockrite Processes, Inc.). June 27, 1945, No. 23548/47. Divided out of 596,926. [Class 83 (iv)] In a tube rolling mill of the pilger type in which the die rolls 70 are mounted in a reciprocating carriage 73, the carriage is provided with fore and aft pairs of rollers 83 by which it is suspended from horizontal tracks 82 above the point 75 at which the reciprocating means 35 is secured to the carriage and gears 85, secured to the rollers so as to rotate therewith, mesh with racks 86 secured to the frames of the machine at the sides of the roller tracks. The die-rolls 70 are rigidly secured to shafts 71 mounted on roller bearings 72 in the carriage 73 and are coupled together by gears 76. In addition, gears 77 at each end of the lower shaft 71 mesh with a rack 78 secured to the frame so that the dies are rotated as the carriage is rocked. In order to reduce vibration, the.centre of gravity of the carriage is kept as close as possible to the horizontal tracks 82 and the reciprocating arms 35 are secured to the carriage in approximately the same horizontal plane as the centre of gravity. The distance between the front and rear rollers 83 is at least four times and preferably seven times the distance between the track, and the horizontal plane containing the centre of gravity. The complete mill is described in Specification 596,926.
