Abstract
p - Dialkylaminomethylbenzyl alcohols are obtained by diazotizing the free amino group of a p-dialkylaminomethylbenzylamine and decomposing the resulting diazo compound. In an example: 1-aminomethyl-4-diethylaminomethylbenzene in aqueous acetic acid is treated with aqueous sodium nitrite and when evolution of nitrogen has ceased the reaction mixture is heated to complete the conversion to 4-diethylaminomethylbenzyl alcohol. Specifications 593,921 and 594,624 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises the manufacture of products having the general formula HO-CH2-Ar-CH2-NR1R2 (wherein Ar represents an aryl nucleus which may be substituted by one or more alkyl or alkoxy groups and wherein R1 and R2 represent the same or different alkyl or aralkyl groups or together form, with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached, a closed ring, which ring may include, if desired, a second hereto atom, e.g. oxygen or nitrogen). This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
