Abstract

595,658. Artificial respiration and respiratory apparatus. ERICKSON, C, N. July 6, 1945, No. 17321. [Class 81 (ii)] In artificial respiration apparatus comprising a mask, a source of gas under pressure and gas control mechanism, the latter includes a housing 2 having a port 63 connected to the mask and a conduit 14 traversing the housing with a fitting 16 at one end connected to the gas source and a discharge port 32 at the other. A venturi nozzle 22 and tube 23 are screwed into conduit 14, whereby with valve member 33 in the open position shown in Fig. 3, air is withdrawn from the interior of the housing and so of the lungs through a port (not shown) in the part of the conduit surrounding the nozzle. The air and gas escape through apertures 21 in a felt-lined silencer 19. A diaphragm 6 is clamped between a flange 8 and ring 9 held by section 1a of the housing when screwed into position, and its upper side is open to the atmosphere through vents 11. When the pressure in the housing is reduced to a certain limit, the diaphragm is bowed inwards, thereby closing valve 33 through the action of arms 34 (straddling conduit 14) and toggle device 36, 39. The gas thereupon passes from the nozzle and port referred to, to the lungs. When the pressure reaches a certain limit, diaphragm 6 is pressed outwardly and the cycle repeated. A vacuum relief valve (not shown) is provided on the casing adapted to open when the vacuum exceeds, say, 4 ounces/sq. in., and also an adjustable pressure relief valve. At one extreme, it is set to open when the pressure exceeds, say, 4 ounces/sq. in. ; at the other when the pressure is less than that required to move diaphragm 6, whereby the device may be used as an oxygen-supply apparatus as in airplanes. The mark which is preferably made of transparent material, may be mounted directly in port 63, or (Fig. 5) there may be interposed a tube 70 serving as a handle and provided with a valve 75 which may be operated to open vent 76 should the patient vomit. The mask may alternatively be mounted axially at the end of the tube. In another form, a tubular handle is disposed adjacent gas control valve G.
