Abstract
848,725. Respiratory appliances. BLEASE ANAESTHETIC EQUIPMENT Ltd. March 13, 1959 [Dec. 13, 1957], No. 38805/57. Class 81(2). Artificial respiration apparatus has triggering means to ensure positive inflation of the lungs immediately the patient makes an effort at respiration. A chamber 1 is connected with a continuous supply of air through the jet of a Venturi device 3 and through a pipe 4, both joined to a proportioning valve 5, and, as the pressure in the chamber increases, bellows 6 are compressed to force air or oxygen into the patient's lungs through a tube 9, the pipe line being fitted with non-return valves 7, 8. When the pressure in chamber 1 has risen sufficiently, a diaphragm 10 is moved towards the right, air enclosed in chamber 11 being discharged through release valve 24, and valve 13 is thereupon opened so that chamber 1 is connected to atmosphere and Venturi 3 becomes effective to withdraw air from the patient's lungs. The subsequent closure of valve 13 by diaphragm 10 is dependent on the rate of air flow into chamber 11 through bleed valve 17, the return movement being caused by an adjustable spring 14. If, during the exhalation phase of the apparatus the patient attempts to inspire, the additional rarefaction in the tubes 25, 26 causes diaphragm 20 to be raised and to open valve 24, whereupon diaphragm 10 immediately moves back, to close valve 13, and the inhalation phase commences. Specifications 649,229 and 806,471 are referred to.
