595,320. Gauging-apparatus. BOARDMAN, H., WHITEHEAD, A., BURROW. S. R., and TERNENT, G. P. Nov. 18, 1944, No. 22964. [Class 106 (ii)] Apparatus for determining the curvature of a surface or the departure thereof from standard form is characterised in that the usual movable measuring point is located outside of the fixed points instead of within. As shown in Fig. 1, two fixed contacts A, B are mounted on a beam 10 at one end and centrally, respectively, and the vertically movable measuring contact C embodying a dial gauge 11 is mounted at the other end. If the contacts are equally spaced, the dial 11 will register twice the actual deviation of the contact B from the true horizontal. A pivoted guide member 12 can be swung into vertical position to facilitate measurement of thin articles &c. In a modification, the beam is modified and provided with lifting handles, the contact A mav be an adjusting-screw or a micrometer, the contact C is associated with a fiducial indicator and resting-pins are provided on the underface of the beam to prevent the gauge falling over. In Fig. 7, the gauge has a triangular base 15 supported by three legs 16, and the measuring contact C is mounted on an outrigger arm 17 ; this arrangement is suitable for measuring departure from normal of curved surfaces.
