Abstract

Artificial stone is produced by partially hydrating comminuted lime by treatment with water vapour at a temperature of above 100 DEG C. or with water dispersed in air, mixing the partially hydrated lime with a siliceous or argillaceous material, adding water, moulding or otherwise shaping the mixture to the required form, allowing the lime in the mixture to hydrate completely, and hardening the composition by the action of steam under superatmospheric pressure. In a modification unhydrated lime and the siliceous or argillaceous material are ground together in an air-swept mill and partial hydration of the lime is effected simultaneously by introducing a controlled amount of steam into the air current. The product may be rendered cellular by forming gas bubbles in the mixture, e.g., by incorporating aluminium powder.
