Abstract

Solids are contacted with solids by continuously feeding to a vessel a particulate solid which is maintained in the fluid state as defined in Specifications 569,691 and 582,055, [Group XII], by the upward passage through it of a gas, the particles moving relatively to another particulate solid in the vessel, and continuously removing the first solid from the vessel at a point remote from its entry. The second particulate solid may be retained within the vessel in the unfluidised or fluidised state, or may be continuously fed to the vessel and removed therefrom, so as to attain countercurrent flow between the solids. When the second solid remains in the vessel in the unfluidised state, the first solid may pass either up or down the vessel, i.e., in co-current or counter-current with the fluidising gas. The process may be used for the temperature control of one of the solids by contact with the other solid, or one of the solids may be a catalyst for a reaction between constituents of the fluidising gases, and the other solid a substance which will remove undesired reaction products. In the catalytic treatment of water gas with steam to increase its hydrogen content, lime may be used to remove carbon dioxide. An example describes the contacting of sand and magnetite.
