Abstract

Fatty acid nitriles are produced by a method which comprises passing a mixture of gaseous ammonia and fatty acid vapours into a reaction zone containing a fluidized dehydration catalyst and maintained at a substantially constant temperature in the range 300 DEG to 550 DEG C., and recovering the fatty acid nitrile issuing in the vapour phase from the reaction zone. Preferably the catalyst particles have a diameter less than 300 m . The catalyst may be regenerated by contact with air at a temperature in the range 400 DEG to 650 DEG C. In the examples (a) the mixed fatty acids from palm-kernel oil are reacted with ammonia in the presence of a fluidized catalyst consisting of activated alumina at a temperature of 370 DEG C.; (b) palmitic acid is reacted with ammonia in the presence of fluidized activated alumina at 365 DEG C. and (c) stearin is reacted with ammonia in the presence of fluidized activated alumina at 380 DEG C. to give the corresponding nitriles.
