Abstract

23,045. Phillips, W. A., and Bulteel, J. G. Oct. 5. Catalytic precesses and apparatus.-In producing catalytic reactions, in which the gases or vapours that are to react are caused to carry the finely powdered catalyst through the reaction chamber/which is usually heated externally or internally, and in which the catalyst is separated from the gas by a filter, cyclone, or the like and returned to the process, the catalyst is revivified, before being fed to a fresh portion of reaction gas; or the gas and catalyst may be received in water, the catalyst being separated by filtration, dried, revivified, and used again. In the application of this process to the known method of producing nitrogen oxides and nitric acid from air and steam in contact with iron oxide, which is best heated by adding combustible gas to the air and steam, the air and gas, entering at e, f, mix with steam introduced at d and receive iron oxide from a hopper g, the mixture passing through a reaction chamber a packed with a coarse form of the catalyst, in this case iron rods, and set in a flue b. The gas passes away through an asbestos filter. i to an exit j, assisted, if necessary, by suction, while the iron oxide falls through a vessel h and pipe k, which may be externally heated at l to revivify the catalyst, which finally reaches the hopper g again.
