[Class 52 (ii)] The back and seat frames of a chair are pivoted together and to the main side frames, the back near its lower end and the seat near the front end and the pivot members of the back and seat in the side frames are adjustable vertically. Side frames 1, 2 built up of channelsection metal pressings are spaced apart by front and rear members 6 and diagonal stays 7, 8. Seat and back frames 3, 4 hinged together at 60 are pivotally supported by transverse bars 11, 12 carried by parts 15, 16 slidable in members 25 secured to vertical parts 14 of the side frames and provided with racks 26 with which engage cross-pins 29 on spring-urged rod 27 slidable in the bars 11, 12 whereby these bars may be supported at various heights. The pins 29 are disengaged from the racks by a plate 32 which bears on a roller 31 on the rod 27 and is caused to move inwards as it is moved upwards, by engagement of inclined slots 35 therein with fixed pins 34. The plate 32 for the bar 12 is operated by a press-plate 36 pivoted at 37 to the side frame 2 and connected to the plate 32 by linkage 39-44. The plate 32 for the bar 11 is similarly operated by a press-plate mounted on the side-frame 1. Forward and rearward movement of the seat is permitted by a slot 54 therein through which passes the bar 11, forward movement being restrained by a one-way frictional damping device comprising a band wrapped around a rod secured to the bar 11 parallel thereto, the band being directly attached to the seat frame, directly at its forward end and by a spring at its rear end. Either bar 11, 12 may be lowered after depressing the corresponding finger plate 36, by the occupant permitting his weight to act on the seat against the force of springs 17, 20 connected to the slides 15, 16 and which can be allowed to raise the bars by the occupant relieving the seat of his weight. For assembling the seat and back to the side frames the rods 27 are held in the inner position in the bars 11, 12 by engagement of a catch plate 61 with a groove 62 in the rod. The end of the bar near the cross-pin 29 is then passed through the member 15 which is slotted at 63 to take the cross-pin in the vertical position.
