392,165. Seats ; spring upholstery. LOCKLEY, F. W., The Chestnuts, Oak Hill, Woodford Green, Essex. Nov. 10, 1931, No. 27894. [Classes 52 (ii) and 52 (iv).] The seat proper and the back of a seat, chair, &c. are movable about respective pivots and the rear part of the pivotal seat is connected by a resilient link to the lower part of the back so that, under the weight of the user, the lower part of the pivotal back is advanced to yield greater comfort. The seat proper a and back b may be interconnected by an adjustable flexible element d and their pivots p, p<1> may be adjustable in slots m, n respectively, as shown in Fig. 4. The slots m, n are formed at the top of pillars c<1>, c<2> forming part of the main rigid frame c, and the pivots are dropped in through slots r and secured in the required position by nuts o. Each pivot is secured in the framework of the seat or back by a bushing and engaging collar (not shown). In another modification, the pivots are interconnected by curved pivotally connected bars and their simultaneous adjustment in the slots obtained by operating a hand-screw. In the easy chair construction illustrated in Fig. 9, the pivots p of the seat a move along the slotted parts m attached to the base c and are directly connected by bars c<12>, c<14> to the back pivots p<1> and by means of a lever catch u engaging rack teeth u<1>, the seat and back may be secured in any adjusted position. The arms w connected by cross members v move with the adjusted seat by rollers w<2> running on guide rails and, to permit the arms to partake of the tilting movement of the seat, the rear ends are supported by springs x and the front ends suitably hinged to the runners of the guideways. To afford additional comfort, the usual upholstery or cushion may be supported upon a structure comprising springs f, f<1>, Fig. 2, which may be connected by means of fabric, leather, &c. pockets g, g<1> to the side bars e, e<1>, e<2>, e<3> of the seat and back.
