591,065. Converting rotary motion into reciprocating motion. KINGCLIFFE ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., O'ROURKE, F. O'ROURKE, F. K. M., and WATSON, L. W. March 8, 1945, No. 5831. [Class 80 (iii)] Mechanism for converting rotary motion into reciprocating motion comprises a rotatable shaft 1 with intersecting right and left handed threads 2, 3, engaged by a member 19, rotatably carried by a non-rotatable traveller 16, which reciprocates as the shaft 1 rotates. The traveller on arriving at the end of its stroke, engages on a collar 8, and forces it back against the action of a spring 10, until the member 19 enters an enlarged part 22 of the thread, where it leaves thread 2 and enters thread 3. A similar action takes place at the other end of the stroke. The stroke of the traveller 16 may be made adjustable by providing in addition to the collars 8 adjustable stops 47, 48 which withdraw the thread engaging member 37, Fig. 6, from one thread 2 and re-engage it with the other thread 3. When the traveller reaches stop 48, the member 37 is lifted by a cam 43 on the shaft 35, 36 of the member 37 riding up a ramp 52. When the member 37 is free of the thread 2, the cam 43 abuts a spring-loaded plunger 53, and is rotated until stopped by a pin having lost motion in a recess in a plug 40. The member is then forced down into the other thread 3 by a spring 39. A similar action takes place at the other stop 47; in this case a cam 44, at right angles to the cam 43, rises up a ramp 55 and engages a spring-loaded plunger 56 to move the member 37 from thread 3 to thread 2.
