Abstract

591,056. Lubricating systems. BARTON, M. Oct. 6, 1944, Nos. 19155/44 and 12/45. [Class 12 (iii)] The oil level in the crankcase sump B of an internal-combustion engine of a vehicle is maintained by a pump which is interconnected with the brake pedal of the vehicle so as to be operated each time the brake pedal is actuated thereby to raise oil from a reservoir A, situated below the normal oil level in the sump, to such sump which has an overflow pipe O to return excess oil to the reservoir. As shown the pumping. is effected by applying the vacuum of the braking system, or from the induction pipe of the engine, through a brake-pedal operated valve to the rear of a spring-pressed pump plunger E which draws oil from the tank A through a tubular filter P and on release of the vacuum forces oil through a pipe F to the sump, any excess oil returning to the tank A by the overflow pipe O. The pump plunger may instead be directly actuated by a mechanical connection to the brake pedal. The pump may be an electrically driven piston, diaphragm, or gear, pump operated while a brake pedal switch is closed. According to the second Provisional Specification the pump may be operated at intervals by means of a time switch. The tank is provided with a visual oil gauge.
