590,211. Rolling annular bodies. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd..Jan. 26, 1945, No. 2089. Convention date, Jan. 31, 1944. [Class 83 (iv)] Skew-rolling.-An annular part 30 is formed with a feather-edge by rolling between a freely rotatable roll 98, in contact with the inner periphery of the work, and a surrounding roll mounted in a ball-race housing and driven through a friction plate 88 by a V-belt pulley 90. The work is clamped to a freely rotatable support 20 through a shoulder 28 on an adaptor 22 by threaded spindle 110. The external roll assembly is carried by a slidable member 76 in which is journalled a threaded spindle 102 with hand wheel 106, the spindle engaging an internally threaded pinion 64, located between stationary racks 60 and 62. The carriage 76 is resiliently mounted on the frame 38 through springs at 5 and slide 48 interposed between the carriage and the frame, slide 48 being provided with grooves to engage tongues on the frame to allow vertical movement, and with tongues to engage grooves on the carriage to allow horizontal movement. On turning hand wheel 106, the carriage is fed forward, bringing roll 84 in contact with the work until limited by stops 108, whereby a thin annulus is partly divided from the work. Further rotation of the hand wheel 106 locks the pinion 64 and spindle 102, causing the pinion to roll down the racks 60 and 62, thereby moving the roll 84 downwards and turning down the material for the further edge. Slight reversal of the hand wheel releases the locked pinion and spindle, whereupon springs 50 return the carriage to the horizontal position as determined by stops 56. The operation is repeated until the feather edge is complete. The inner roll 98 is slightly conical and the roll 84 is tilted with the frame 38 by screws 42 to produce the feathering of the edge. A yoke 58 working in conjunction with a threaded extension of rack 62 permits the initial alignment of the roll 84 with the work.
