Abstract
588,088. Centrifugal pumps; gas turbines. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd., and HOWELL, A. R. July 28, 1943, No. 12247. [Classes 110 (i) and 110(iii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A compressor with radial flow turbine-type blades is arranged for a diametral flow of the fluid being pumped. As shown, there are two rings of rotating blades 1 and segments of guide blades 2, 3. Suitable fairings 9, 12 guide the flow across the centre of the wheel. The rotating blades are of the impulse type and the stator blades of the reaction type. The blades may be mounted on end discs in the Ljungstrom manner and several rotors may be arranged end to end on one shaft. A rotor may have one or any number of rings of rotor blades and oppositely-rotating rotors may be used. One or more rings of rotor and/or stator blades may be used to turn the delivery-into an axial or other direction. The compressor may be used as part of a gas turbine plant and the turbines may be of similar construction. In one case, the H.P. turbine drives the H.P. compressor and the L.P. turbine two L.P. compressors in series. The compressors may be used to provide a stream of fluid for jet-propulsion and may be placed in ducts in nacelles, fuselages or thick wings. The jets may be directed downwards for imparting lift.
