Abstract

588,004. Relief valves. LABROW, S., and IMPERIAL. CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 11, 1945, No. 915. [Class 135] A spring-loaded relief valve for high pressures, e.g. above 200 atmospheres, having an inlet 2, outlet 8, a seat 3 of hardened steel and a closure member having a hardened steel or tungsten carbide nose 11, has the spring formed of one or more coned annular discs or Belleville washers 12 compressed by a cap 16, the inward movement of which is limited by an interchangeable ring 17. When a plurality of discs is employed, spacer rings may be inserted between adjacent discs and the discs may be arranged, as shown, with the surfaces of alternate discs non-parallel, or in nests consisting of two or more discs, the surfaces of the discs in each nest being parallel to one another, but not parallel to the discs in adjacent nests. The load deflection characteristic of the discs is stated to be such that, at the blow-off pressure, the valve is capable of opening rapidly to the full extent.
