Abstract

587,280. Hypodermic injectors. SQUIBB & SONS, E. R. July 17, 1944, No. 13636. Convention date, Jan. 28. [Class 81 (ii)] In a hypodermic injector of the kind comprising a container, as shown, a flexible metal container, 2, having a pierceable discharge end 4, a needle 5 immovably secured to the container with the lumen of the needle communicating with the outside of the discharge end, a stiff wire 7 longer than, and carried in the lumen of the needle for piercing the end 4, and a cover 9, the cover 13 made of flexible material, and is secured at 11 to the wire 7 whereby the latter may be pressed forward to puncture the end 4 without removal of the cover. This may be made of a transparent vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer known as Transflex, a heat sealable rubber hydrochloride known under the Registered Trade Mark "Pliofilm," or soft gelatine. In assembly, the open tube 2 is placed on a mandrel, the needle hub 6 forced over neck 3, the flexible cover tube frictionally engaged over hub 6, a heated metal rod, recessed to accommodate the wire head 8, lowered into the top of the cover tube, and the top of the tube then flattened over the wire head after withdrawal of the rod. After filling, the tube is sealed, e.g., by electric welding at 17, and steam sterilized. Alternatively, a sterilizing agent is incorporated in the tube contents and the operative surfaces covered with sterilizing material. The. protective cover may alternatively be joined to the wire head before assembly. Another method of operation consists in applying cement or a solvent to the distal end of the tube, and pressing the end over the wire head ; or the cover may be moulded with a closed end enveloping the wire. Specifications 540,413 and 580,560 are referred to.
