[Class 37] [Also in' Groups VI and XIX] In Fig. 5 the wall of a metal tube 590 is scanned by an electromagnet 573 and a record as shown in Fig. 7 is obtained. The diameter of each dot is proportional to the wall thickness at a point corresponding to the location of the dot. The tube is rotated in unison with the drum electrode 501 carrying the electro-responsive record sheet and the electromagnet and the electrode stylus 511 are coupled for movement along a rotating screw 515. The electromagnet forms one arm of a wheatstone bridge the unbalanced voltage of which is impressed on the stylus and drum. An amplifier 578 and interrupter 580 are arranged in the circuit. Adjustment of the voltage can be made by the variable inductance 574 forming one of the arms of the bridge.
