561,360. Protractors and the like. SHAW, C. G. Dec. 7, 1942, No. 17353. [Class 97 (iii)] Relates to a protractor for converting and transferring bearings to or from maps, charts, &c. A square plate c is divided into 360 degrees around its periphery and is termed the grid-bearing plate. A similarly marked dial a termed the magnetic bearing dial is mounted on the plate c together with a pointer h and an apertured centre piece j, the whole being adapted to be adjusted and clamped together by means of a screw bush n. The device is fixed to a chart or map so that the observer's position is indicated through the central aperture of the piece j and the N.S. line of the grid bearing plate is set parallel to the grid lines of the, map which has been oriented. The magnetic dial is rotated to represent the magnetic variation and the pointer h is rotated to point along the line whose bearing is being ascertained. The reading on the dial a between N and the pointer indicates the desired magnetic bearing. The reverse side of the plate c is marked in any manner such as is indicated in Fig. 5.
