586,571. Jet propulsion plant. HALL, J. S., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. April 5, 1943, No. 5448. [Class 110 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A fluid ejection nozzle or duct tube for directing the exhaust gases of an internal-combustion engine into a reaction jet for aircraft propulsion, comprises a fixed part 1 carrying a pair of diametrically complementary half tubes or cones 6 which open to increase the cross-sectional area of the jet or duct, the triangular gaps so formed being covered by fixed fingers 11 having inner surfaces in contact with the half cones or tubes and shaped as surfaces of revolution generated about the hinge axis 5. The half tubes or cones 6 may comprise relatively eccentric inner and outer skins 7, 8 united by a frame 9, whilst the fixed fingers 11 also may be of double-skin structure. The area of seal between the half tubes or cones 6 and the fixed fingers 11 may be increased by means of conical strips 10 attached to the outer edges of the half tubes or cones. These strips 10 may be castings or other solid metal and have thin mating edges 10a. The mutually fitting surfaces 7a, 1a of the half tubes or cones 6 and the fixed part 1 are formed as parts of spheres generated about the common axis 5 of the hinge pins 13. The parts 1, 6, 10, 11, are all enclosed in an outer shell 2, which may be elliptical in cross-section and joined to the fixed part 1 by annular channel members 3. The fixed fingers may be strengthened, and secured to the fixed part 1 by means of longitudinal girders. The inner skins of the fixed fingers 11 engage in slots 14b in the circular front edges 14a of the hinge bosses 14. Each half tube or cone 6 carries an arm 18 which is operated scissor-fashion by a member 22 driven by a servomotor. Specification 586,551 is referred to.
